Taking center stage with Jaxton Jones

Building bonds; Activities give Jones opportunity to strengthen relationships

Jaxton Jones

Being a part of something has always been something that Jaxton Jones has dedicated himself to.

The Fort Dodge Senior High senior also gets the chance to be with his friends that have the same interests.

“I became involved in the band because I had a bunch of friends that were in it,” Jones said. “I also became involved in theater because of friends. I enjoyed watching plays and musicals as a kid so I decided to do it in middle school and it was really fun.”

While band has become a big part of his life, it’s not all about what comes out of the instruments.

“I think the actual music in the band is only a fraction of what makes the band so special,” Jones said. “The music is great and fun, sure, but the amount of friends I’ve made, and how much I’ve improved, not only in my instrument but in general as a person has been great.”

With all of his peers and friends around him with the same interest, Jones has built lasting relationships.

I definitely think that the band is a family,” Jones said. “I think everyone tries to work together and just really tries to treat everyone with respect, whether you like them or not, and I really like that kind of environment.”

Jones has spent a lot of time on stage, on the field and behind the stage, but his interests also boil over into athletics.

“It is great being in bowling and tennis, bowling is very fun because it’s only Mondays and Fridays, so it isn’t very time consuming, but very fun and competitive,” Jones said. “Tennis on the other hand, can be very time consuming, having meets or practice every day after school, it can be a lot.

“I do think that the tennis environment is very fun but also competitive when they need to be.”

When it comes to acting Jones has been a part of all of it. Behind the stage as well as performing.

“In musicals I really enjoy all of it. I would say I enjoy singing more than acting, but I think that all of it is very fun to me,” Jones said. “I was in a little ‘Luncheonette of Terror’ in middle school as a robber, I was backstage for ‘Tuck Everlasting,’ and I was in an ensemble and some small unnamed parts in ‘Anastasia.’

“It is important for me to be involved because I think that it makes you a better and more fun person. It really brings out the life in some more quiet people.”

A big part of high school for Jones has been sharing his voice.

“I enjoy choir for a lot of reasons, but the main two are the environment and I just really love singing,” Jones said. “Everybody in the choir is really fun to talk to and they really grasp the music well.”

Walking down the halls for the final year will be a lot of lasts and new memories.

“I think that out of all the lasts, the one that i will miss the most will be the marching band, just because of how many fun memories I have with it,” Jones said. “I am looking forward to becoming more independent after I graduate, and being able to live on my own, as well as getting better at everything I’m involved in.

“Being a Dodger to me means being able to overcome adversity, and even if you are stressed, making it through the school year and feeling good about your grades and abilities.”

Joining speech allowed Jones to become familiar with a different group of people.

“Being involved in speech mainly helped me get along with people I don’t know as well,” Jones said. “Speech is very time consuming when competing, but I think that if you feel like you practice a lot and feel good about it, then it will be worth it no matter what grade they give you.”

Jones has been surrounded by people that have helped him evolve.

“A lot of my biggest influences have been upperclassmen, and teachers,” Jones said. “I really feel like being older than people in your school can make them look up to you more, and I definitely felt that same way, and hope underclassmen can look up to me.”

Jones is undecided of his plans after high school. He plans on pursuing a career in music.
