The former home of Amigos, a restaurant and bar along the Des Moines River at 280 N. First St., is seen Monday afternoon. The building was heavily damaged by a fire in August. Mark Campbell, the owner of Amigos, announced that it will be rebuilt, with construction to start next spring.
An August electrical fire at Amigos, 280 N. First St., left the building a total loss, but owner Mark Campbell said the popular restaurant and bar along the Des Moines River will be rebuilt.
“We have taken out as much as possible from inside the building, and now are letting the SERT team and Fort Dodge Fire Department use it for practice before we take it down,” said Campbell.
SERT is the Special Emergency Response Team, a group of Fort Dodge police officers and Webster County sheriff’s deputies that handles high risk situations.
The building is anticipated to be torn down before the end of December. Dirt will then be added to the site to raise it up and a new building is anticipated to be built in the spring.
“We’ve been working with the City of Fort Dodge and the Department of Natural Resources,” said Campbell. “We’re trying to get our new site designed and get Jensen Builders in there to start working on it in the spring.”
The restaurant was a popular location for hosting local fundraisers, motorcycle runs, post-wedding party stops, and more. Since the fire, Campbell said fans of Amigos nationwide have been reaching out by text and social media to recall their favorite memories as well as to ask how they could help.
“The outpouring of support has been unimaginable,” said Campbell. “We have one of the greatest communities around, and everybody knows it. Unfortunately events like this happen, but the amazing side of it is the outpouring of support. The people that have contacted us from all over the country, watching the videos and seeing the photos, and the family photo we took last weekend, it’s just been incredible. As much as we have helped people, people have offered to help us tenfold.”
