Press box approved at sports complex
FD City Council OKs funding for Growth Alliance
A new upper level press box will be going up in the mini majors area of Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex next year.
The press box will be constructed atop the existing concession stand building, giving it a second level. It will be used by the media covering games in the section of the park that features replicas of Yankee Stadium in New York City, Wrigley Field in Chicago, Fenway Park in Boston and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
The City Council on Monday hired Giardino Construction LLC, of Polk City, to build the press box at a cost of $478,282.
The work is to be done by June 1, 2026.
Yankee Stadium is the home field of the Iowa Central Community College softball team. That field, plus Wrigley and Fenway, will see increased use as the girls state softball tournament moves to an expanded format.
Other bidders for the job were Kolacia Construction, $490,157; Doyle Construction, $497,950; and Jensen Builders Ltd., $545,775.
In other business Monday, the council approved a measure giving the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance a maximum of $750,000 over three years, beginning July 1, 2026, to support its economic development and business retention efforts.
That money will come from tax increment financing, which occurs when increased property tax revenue from a given area is set aside to be reinvested in that area.
The council has provided money to the Growth Alliance since its inception.
The council also gave initial approval to rezoning some vacant city owned lots along Fifth Avenue South between 15th and 19th streets to an arterial commercial designation.
