One block of busy First Avenue South remains closed to traffic after part of a building’s facade tumbled down into the roadway late Saturday morning.

No one was injured and no vehicles were damaged. But security camera video from a business across the street showed the facade fell just seconds after a westbound vehicle passed the building at 1520 First Ave. S.

First Avenue South between 15th and 16th streets is closed.

Also, 16th Street between Central Avenue and First Avenue South is closed.

A section of brick and masonry near the top of the five-story building fell at about 11:40 a.m. Saturday.

Chunks of bricks and masonry cover part of the road in the 1500 block of First Avenue South Saturday morning after part of the building at 1520 First Ave. S. fell.

Fire Department Capt. Jeff Hill said firefighters in the nearby fire station could feel the ground shake when the collapse happened.

Firefighters and police officers were quickly on scene. They blocked the street with their vehicles until a Public Works Department crew arrived with barricades.

The building is owned by Frank Hurdle, of Holly Springs, Mississippi, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office. Those records show it was built in 1914.

Starting at $4.94/week.
