A Fort Dodge family grabbed their dogs and escaped their home early Sunday morning as it burned around them.

According to Fort Dodge Fire Chief Matt Price, the structure fire at 1320 N. 22nd St. was called in to dispatch at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews found an active structure fire which required an initial attack using a single handline to bring the fire under control within 16 minutes.

A second alarm was activated which recalled four off-duty firefighters to staff the station and respond to additional calls.

The Fort Dodge Fire Department remained on scene at the fire for about three hours. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Price said it is not suspicious in nature.

While the department was on scene at the fire, the firefighters who were called in to staff the station responded to multiple medical calls.

The Fort Dodge Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Fort Dodge Police Department and MidAmerican Energy.
