Moehnke, Davis, McCubbin in, Alstott retains seat

Former Councilman Terry Moehnke returned to the Fort Dodge City Council , where he will be joined by newcomers Scott Davis and Todd McCubbin plus local government veteran Kim Alstott.

Those four were the winners of contested council races Tuesday.

Moehnke and Davis were elected to at-large seats. They will replace incumbents Quennel McCaleb and Lydia Schuur, who did not seek reelection.

McCubbin won the Ward 3 seat, replacing Dave Flattery, who was elected mayor.

Alstott won his eighht term representing Ward 4.

In the at-large race, Moehnke won 42.25 percent (2,406 votes), Davis won 23.86 percent (1,359 votes), Michael Haubrich won 18.24 percent (1,039 votes) and Eugene Newsome won 14.77 percent (841 votes).

“I’m thankful for the people that thought enough of me to vote for me,” Moehnke said.

He said he believes name recognition and a positive approach to campaigning helping him win.

“I think you’ve got to have a positive outlook, a positive approach,” he said.

Moehnke said he is looking forward to sitting down with Flattery and the council to create a strategy to “make an achievable difference in the community.”

In Ward 3, McCubbin won 57.8 percent and Dennis Mernka won 41.54 percent.

McCubbin received 789 votes and Mernka received 567.

“The No. 1 thing I heard while knocking 1,900 doors was that we want to continue to grow,” McCubbin said. “I think people really want to see that continue.”

Ward 3 is the northeastern part of the city.

In Ward 4, Alstott received 52 .02 percent of the vote while Ed Touney won 47.73 percent.

Alstott won 618 votes to Touney’s 567 votes.

“I’m really thankful that people in Fort Dodge wanted me to represent them,” Alstott said.
