McCubbin, Mernka advance to general election
Ward 3 candidate list is trimmed to two
Todd McCubbin and Dennis Mernka prevailed in Tuesday’s primary election and will square off for the Ward 3 seat on the Fort Dodge City Council in the November vote.
McCubbin was the top vote-getter, with 157 votes, or 33.4 percent, according to unofficial election results released Tuesday night by Webster County Auditor Shaunna Abrams.
Mernka was next, with 142 votes, or 30.21 percent.
Caleb Pokorny finished third with 112 votes or 23.83 percent.
Jeanette Moss rounded out the field with 58 votes or 12.34 percent.
The purpose of the primary election was to reduce the field to two candidates for the Nov. 4 general election.
“It was awesome that so many people came out and supported me,” McCubbin said.
He said having conversations with voters about himself and his ideas, along with demonstrating “my commitment to making our community better” were key to his success.
“I’m very happy with the results,” Mernka said. “It was a close race. I’m happy to get out and start campaigning hard for the general election.”
He said he believes going door-to-door and meeting people was key to his election showing. He said he visited about 940 homes.
“I am just really appreciative of the support I received during the race,” Pokorny said. “I wish the best of luck to Todd and Dennis.”
He said he will support McCubbin in the general election. McCubbin’s vision for the city, he said, is more in line with his own.
Moss did not return a call seeking comment Tuesday night.
Ward 3 is the northeast part of the city.
The incumbent in that ward, Councilman Dave Flattery, is running unopposed for mayor, which created an open council seat.
Councilmembers elected to represent wards serve two-year terms.
