SCC student killed in crash with semi
LYTTON — A collision with a semitrailer claimed the life of a South Central Calhoun High School student Wednesday morning.
Caydn O. Ogden, 15, of Rockwell City, died according to the Iowa State Patrol and school officials.
His death prompted the postponement of some homecoming week activities. Counselors and local ministers were present at the school to help grieving students.
The crash happened at 7:05 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 and Fletcher Avenue in Calhoun County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
Troopers reported that Ogden was driving a 2002 Ford F150 pickup north on Fletcher Avenue and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with the highway. His vehicle then collided with an eastbound 2023 Mack semitrailer operated by Richard L. Kanne, 71, of Lake View, troopers said.
After the collision, the pickup landed in the ditch on the south side of the highway while the semi ended up in the highway median.
The State Patrol reported that Kanne was injured, but the crash report does not indicate that he was transported to a hospital.
Troopers reported that there was dense fog in the area at the time of the crash.
Firefighters from Lytton, Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies, Calhoun County Emergency Medical Service and the Iowa Department of Transportation responded to the crash.
