Passenger dies after being thrown from car in Wright County

WRIGHT COUNTY — A Webster City man died Sunday evening when he was thrown from a car in Wright County that ultimately struck a utility pole and burned.

Michael Mendez Mendez, 36, was a passenger in a car heading south on Wright County Road R-38 when the car dropped off the edge of the roadway and the driver overcorrected, according to an Iowa State Patrol report filed by Trooper Neil Morenz.

The driver, Josue Castanon Coronado, 24, lost control of the vehicle, which ended up in a cornfield. He was injured.

Also injured was another passenger, Antoni Emmanuel Castenon Coronado, 20.

All three men were thrown from the car because they were not wearing seatbelts, the ISP report stated.

The accident happened about shortly before 7:30 p.m. eight miles south of Clarion. The vehicle was a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt.

In addition to the Iowa State Patrol, Clarion and Eagle Grove ambulances responded to the scene, as did Clarion Fire.
