Boston Center rep: Owners to spend $400,000 on elevator

Elevators in the Boston Center that don’t work have been mentioned a few times over the last couple of weeks as the Fort Dodge City Council moves to bring about some improvements downtown.

On Aug. 25, the council accepted a $100,000 state grant on behalf of the owners of the Boston Center that will be used to help pay for a new elevator.

On Monday, one of the building’s owners, Neven Mulholland, of Fort Dodge, spoke to the council about that project.

He said the elevator job will cost $600,000.

He said the building’s owners will pay more than $400,000 of that cost.

Mulholland said the owners learned of a new state grant program and made an application, which resulted in the award of the $100,000 grant.

He said $66,000 has been spent on the elevators in the last three years. He said the elevator maintenance company reported that parts for those elevators are not made anymore.

The building in the 800 block of Central Avenue is 111 years old.

The elevators haven’t been the only trouble spot in the structure. Mulholland said the boiler has been replaced twice in the last seven years.

He said the building owners have never asked for help from the city to fix any of these problems.

Starting at $4.94/week.
