Birt pleads not guilty to assault on former Sac Co. sheriff
SAC CITY — A Sac City man has pleaded not guilty to charges of willful injury resulting in serious injury and assault on a peace officer, both class C felonies, after he allegedly assaulted former Sac County Sheriff Jonathan Meyer.
According to court documents, Matthew Birt, 33, entered a written plea of not guilty on Sept. 16 in Sac County District Court.
Birt is accused of assaulting Meyer at his home on Aug. 25. Although Meyer was off-duty at the time, Birt allegedly made comments during the assault about Meyer’s position with the sheriff’s office. Birt also told Meyer to stay away from his wife.
Birt waived his right to a preliminary hearing earlier this month and posted a $35,000 cash bond.
A jury trial has been scheduled to begin on Nov. 4 in Sac City.
