Fort Dodge firefighters returned Wednesday evening to a downtown building that had been the site of a serious fire Tuesday night.
At about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, smoke was spotted coming from 1107 Central Ave. The smoke was generated by smoldering roofing material. Firefighters cut open the roof and extinguished the smoldering material.
The fire at that location on Tuesday remains under investigation.
It was reported at about 9 p.m.
Fire Chief Matt Price said Tuesday’s blaze started on the second floor and spread up through a pipe space to the third floor and eventually to the roof. He said the fire also spread to a part of the roof of the building next door at 1109 Central Ave.
The residents of the apartments on the upper floors of 1109 Central Ave. were evacuated by police as soon as they arrived on scene Tuesday. Those residents spent Tuesday night in a hotel, but were allowed to return home on Wednesday.
On Nov. 17, 2024, the building at 1107 Central Ave. was the site of a major fire. Six people were injured in that blaze.
That fire was caused by a candle in an apartment that was not supposed to be occupied. No occupancy permits that would allow anyone to legally live in the building have been issued.
The three-story building was constructed in 1895, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office. Those records list the deed holder for the property as Keith E. Eldridge, of Humboldt, with a contract held by Something Unique Safe Keeps LLC.
