Greene County man pleads guilty to trio of charges

Hackfort stabbed cousin with scissors, set home on fire

JEFFERSON — A Greene County man charged with attempted murder, assault on an officer, arson, and eluding officers, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

According to court documents, Devin Hackfort, 28, pleaded guilty in Greene County District Court to two counts of assault on an officer and willful injury.

Hackfort was originally charged with attempted murder, eluding officers, first-degree harassment, second-degree arson, assault on an officer causing injury and assault on an officer with no injury.

According to court documents, on March 11, 2025, Hackfort stabbed his cousin in the back with a pair of scissors at 303 State St. in Paton. While law enforcement officers were en route to the home, he set fire to the home and stated that he intended to kill himself. Deputies from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home while it was on fire, but were unable to find Hackfort.

Hackfort was later seen driving north on U Avenue. However, he refused to stop and a pursuit ensued, reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph in a 25 mph zone. Law enforcement were eventually able to stop Hackfort on State Street. However, while being arrested, he spit in a deputy’s face and later hit his head into the partition of the squad car, knocking himself unconscious.

Hackfort was treated by Greene County Emergency Medical Service and was later medically cleared at the jail.

Hackfort will be sentenced on Sept. 15 at the Greene County Courthouse for the guilty pleas on the charges of assault on an officer and willful injury.

Court documents show that a pretrial conference will be scheduled for the charges of arson, harassment, and eluding an officer.
