FD to recall end of World War II

Event set for Saturday at library

After four brutal years of fighting, President Harry Truman announced on Aug. 14, 1945, that Japan had surrendered, ending World War II at last.

That momentous day will be recalled during a special event this weekend at the Fort Dodge Public Library by the City Square.

Called “Honoring the Last Day of WWII,” the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

“There will be archive material on hand to read and learn about what was going on at that time,” said Meg Beshey, a spokeswoman for the Webster County Historical Society.”The posters are a great visual of what the expectations were during that time — the rationing and the victory gardens.”

“Various residents of Webster County have graciously donated items for display during the event,” she added. “These were items from family members who served in World War II.”

People who were alive at the end of World War II will be invited to share their memories of the time.

There will be refreshments available. Beshey said all of the refreshments will be snacks that were common in 1945.

Starting at $4.94/week.
