Fort Dodge City Councilman Dave Flattery is unopposed in his campaign for mayor, and four people are vying for the council seat he is vacating.

The four-way race includes Todd McCubbin, Dennis Mernka, Jeanette Moss and Caleb Pokorny.

There will be a primary election on Oct. 4 to narrow the field to two candidates for the Nov. 4 general election.

The list of candidates was finalized at 5 p.m. Thursday, which was the deadline for filing nominating petitions.

City voters will pick a mayor, two at-large members of the council and councilmembers from each of the four wards.

At-large Councilwoman Megan Secor is the only city elected official whose position is not on the ballot this year.

Flattery is on track to succeed Mayor Matt Bemrich, who decided not to seek a fifth term this year. Bemrich, the city’s longest serving mayor, was elected in 2009 after serving four years as an at-large member of the council. He was re-elected in 2013, 2017 and 2021.

Flattery, who has been on the council for about 18 years, is the longest serving member of the governing body. He was elected to the council in 2007 as an at-large member. After serving a four-year term as an at-large member, in 2011 he ran for a two-year term representing Ward 3. He was re-elected to the ward seat in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

Ward 3 is the northeastern part of the city.

At-large councilmembers Quennel McCaleb and Lydia Schuur are not seeking re-election. Seeking to replace them are Scott Davis, Michael Haubrich, former Councilman Terry Moehnke and Eugene Newsome.

In Ward 1, Councilwoman Jen Crimmins is unopposed for her second term. Ward 1 is the western and northwestern parts of the city.

In Ward 2, Councilman Cameron Nelson is unopposed for his third term. Ward 2 is the southern half of the city.

In Ward 4, Councilman Kim Alstott is being challenged by Dr. Ed Touney. Alstott is seeking his eighth term. Ward 4 is the north central part of the city.

Councilmembers elected to represent wards serve two-year terms.

The mayor is paid $15,000 a year. City Council members are paid $4,800 a year.

Starting at $4.94/week.
