Nelson seeks reelection to council

‘I still think there is plenty to accomplish’

Cameron Nelson

Fort Dodge City Councilman Cameron Nelson announced Wednesday that he will seek a third term representing Ward 2 in this year’s election.

“I still think there is plenty to accomplish,” he said.

Nelson said that although he was elected by his neighbors in Ward 2 on the city’s south side, he is willing to help all citizens of Fort Dodge.

“The main thing and what I like the most is the one-on-one stuff,” he said.”I like it when people call and say ‘Cameron, my street is flooded. What can you do to help?”

“I want to keep representing the citizens of Fort Dodge,” he added.

Nelson said he is proud of the work he did to help get the new skateboard park built near the old Sunkissed Meadows Golf Course.

He said if he is re-elected he will develop a Civic Academy to teach residents how the various departments of their city government work. Its format, he said, would be similar to the Citizens Academy once conducted by the Police Department.

Nelson said he has talked to officials from 10 communities across the United States that have this type of academy to get their insights.

“We’re getting close to getting that done,” he said.

Nelson said he will also continue working to find a way that the city can afford to hire more police officers. Utility franchise fees of 5 percent that would have paid for adding eight officers to the 40 member force were rejected by the voters in September 2024.

He is a member of the Webster County Emergency Medical Service Advisory Council.

He completed 50 hours of education to earn the designation of certified elected municipal official from the Iowa League of Cities.

Nelson is a commercial relationship manager for First Interstate Bank. He is a graduate of St. Edmond High School.

He and his wife and their two children live at 2235 Highland Park Ave.

Nelson is the only declared council candidate in Ward 2 so far.

Others who have announced their candidacies for city office include Councilman Dave Flattery, who is running for mayor, and council hopefuls Michael Haubrich (at-large) former Councilman Terry Moehnke (at-large) and Todd McCubbin (Ward 3).

Mayor Matt Bemrich is not running for a fifth term and Councilwoman Lydia Schuur is not running for a third term as an at-large member of the council.

Starting at $4.94/week.
