Chicken rules get final approval from FD council

The Fort Dodge City Council on Monday gave final approval to new rules for raising chickens in the city limits.

Those rules are:

• No more than 10 birds on a property.

• No roosters or geese allowed.

• Birds must be kept in an enclosed area and inside a coop or hen house at night.

• Coops and hen houses must be in the back yard.

• Coops and hen houses must be at least 14 feet from the property line.

The council also gave final approval to updated plumbing, electrical, mechanical and fuel gas codes.

In other business, the council approved the purchase of a new vehicle lift to be installed in the mechanics’ shop in the Public Works Department’s central garage on Eighth Avenue South. The lift was purchased for $270,095.84 from Vehicle Service Group, of Madison, Indiana.

The council also purchased a Ford Ranger pickup truck from Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota for $36,334. It will be used by city inspectors. It will replace two Jeep Compasses now in use.
