POCAHONTAS — An Iowa illustrator whose work includes a scene featuring the Pocahontas statue will do an artist talk and exhibition Saturday during the Pocahontas community’s 155th anniversary celebration.

The program by Bob Cunningham will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 16 Second Ave. N.W.

It will feature several of his recent illustrations. A highlight will be his story of Princess Pocahontas, which was published in Our Iowa magazine.

“The sentinel princess has been delighting tourists since she first graced northwest Iowa in 1954,” Cunningham said in a written statement.

Cunningham, of West Des Moines, is a native of Manson.

“As a child growing up in Manson, I admired Norman Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post cover illustrations,” he said. “Rockwell’s iconic portraits of mid-century America have influenced my work ever since.”

He is the author of seven books. Proceeds from his 2022 book “Manson Iowa: The First 150 Years” financed restoration work at the Manson Fairgrounds.

His other books include “Too Little Too Soon: America’s Early Economy Cars” and “Orphan Babies — America’s Forgotten Economy Cars.”

He is a commercial illustrator and automotive historian. He established Cunningham Studio in 1974.
