Street project, chickens on FD council agenda

A controversial project and chickens will be on the agenda for the Fort Dodge City Council tonight.

The council’s efforts will begin at 5 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S., with a workshop on a proposed major overhaul of North 15th Street between Second and 20th avenues north. There are multiple components to the plan, but the one that gets the most attention is a proposal to convert the road from four lanes to three lanes. Engineers say that will make the road safer. Opponents say that will increase traffic congestion.

There will be no formal action on the North 15th Street proposal.

The council will also consider the second reading of a measure regulating chickens in the city.

The major elements of the proposal are:

• No more than 10 birds on a property.

• No roosters or geese allowed.

• Bird must be kept in an enclosed area and inside a coop or hen house at night.

• Coops and hen houses must be in the back yard.

• Coops and hen houses must be at least 15 feet from the property line.

The council approved the first reading of the rules on June 9. The rules must be approved two more times to become law.

Starting at $2.99/week.
