A vehicle being pursued by law enforcement officers crashed dramatically Saturday morning in the 500 block of South 18th Street, rolling over multiple times and hitting a house.

The driver was arrested immediately and charged with multiple offenses stemming from three different incidents.

According to court records, Ryan J. Whitver, 32, of 1424 Seventh Ave. S., is charged with:

• Violation of parole.

• Second-degree burglary.

• Dominion or control of a firearm by a felon.

• Eluding, speed 25 mph over the limit, second or subsequent offense.

• Driving while barred.

• Fourth-degree criminal mischief.

• Speeding.

Whitver, who made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Monday morning, remains in the Webster County Jail. Magistrate Sarah J. Livingston set his bond at $28,000 cash only.

In criminal complaints filed against him, Webster County sheriff’s deputies reported that sometime between midnight and 1 a.m. Friday, Whitver and some unnamed accomplices cut through a chain link fence at a lot owned by Mid-Iowa Towing and removed his vehicle, a 2006 Ford Expedition. The theft of the vehicle was reported to law enforcement.

At around 10 a.m. Saturday, a deputy spotted the vehicle at Sixth Avenue South and 15th Street. The deputy also recognized Whitver, who was driving it, and knew there were warrants for his arrest.

The deputy tried to pull Whitver over by turning on his vehicle’s lights and sirens. However, Whitver raced away from the deputy, according to the criminal complaints filed against him. During the ensuing chase, he lost control of his vehicle in the 500 block of South 18th Street. The vehicle rolled, hitting a house, shrubbery, railings and retaining walls. It came to rest on its wheels in the street.

The eluding, driving while barred, and speeding charges are all related to Saturday’s pursuit, while the criminal mischief charge is for cutting the fence at the towing company lot.

The burglary and firearms charges stem from a May 27 break-in at a house on First Avenue Southeast in Badger in which clothing, shoes, knives, tattoo equipment, cell phones and hand tools were taken. According to the criminal complaints, security camera footage showed Whitver taking items from the house. That footage also showed him holding a handgun, the complaints state.

Livingston scheduled a June 12 preliminary hearing on most of the charges against Whitver.

The charge of violation of parole was referred to the Iowa Board of Parole.

Action on the speeding charge, the least serious offense Whitver is charged with, was postponed for 180 days.

Starting at $2.99/week.
