Man who was shot charged with assault
Officials rule shooter acted in self defense
A Fort Dodge man who was shot on Sunday has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, according to Fort Dodge police. However, police said the man who shot him will not be charged as officers determined he was acting in self defense.
According to Fort Dodge Police Chief Dennis Quinn, Christopher Kockorsky, 48, swung a hacksaw at the victim on two occasions Sunday while standing on the victim’s property. Fearing for his safety, the man fired one shot at Kockorsky, striking him in the arm, Quinn said.
“Under Iowa law, a person can use deadly force if it is reasonable to believe that such force is necessary to avoid serious injury or risk to one’s life or the life or safety from serious injury of another,” said the Fort Dodge Police Department in a press release.
The shooting at 2243 Eighth Ave. S. was reported at 1:53 p.m. Sunday. Kockorsky was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center.
