Fort Dodge suspends burning ban

Yard waste fires will be allowed through June 8

The city of Fort Dodge will temporarily lift its yard waste burn ban from today through June 8.

Only yard waste is permitted to be burned. Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, straw, twigs, small branches, and garden vegetation from your own property only.

Burning of any other materials is strictly prohibited, including trash, paper, furniture, tires, wire, or food waste.

These are the burn site rules:

• Fire piles must be less than 3 feet wide and 2 feet high.

• Fires must be at least 25 feet away from any building or flammable material.

• No more than three piles per property, and piles must be at least 5 feet apart.

These are the additional safety requirements:

1. A responsible adult must be present at all times and able to control the fire, call for help, or extinguish the flames.

2. A working garden hose connected to a water source must be available. If not, approved fire extinguishing equipment must be on-site.

3. All fires must be out by sunset each day.

4. Fires causing a fire hazard or smoke nuisance will be ordered extinguished by fire department or police personnel.

5. No burning is allowed when sustained wind speeds exceed 15 mph.

6. Burning is not allowed in public areas, including alleys, streets, or parks.

7. Gasoline or diesel may not be used to start fires.

8. Do not place yard waste in streets, alleys, or public property.

There are other yard waste disposal options available.
