FD man charged with threats of terrorism

Paivarinta posted threats of shooting law enforcement

A Fort Dodge man was charged Friday with making threats of terrorism, a class D felony.

Daniel W. Paivarinta, 27, was charged in Webster County Magistrate Court after the Fort Dodge Police Department received information that Paivarinta made social media threats of wanting to purchase a firearm and use it on law enforcement.

According to court documents, on Wednesday and Thursday Paivarinta threatened to commit terrorism or made threats intended to cause fear of imminent acts of terrorism within the city limits of Fort Dodge.

In a press release, the Fort Dodge Police Department said further postings online by Paivarinta outlined his plans to carry out an attack on law enforcement, including publicly posting that he was in search of a firearm.

On Thursday, the Fort Dodge Police Department arranged an operation that validated the identity of Paivarinta and his intent to purchase a firearm.

Paivarinta appeared in court Friday morning and is currently being held on $100,000 cash only bond.

Investigators with the Fort Dodge Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division continue to follow up on the incident.
