A Fort Dodge firefighter enters a first floor apartment at 2210 14th Ave. S. while working to extinguish a fire there Friday afternoon. A dog found in a kennel inside the apartment was brought to safety, but a cat perished.

Firefighters rescued a dog from a fire in a Fort Dodge apartment Friday afternoon.

No one was hurt, but a cat died in the blaze at 2210 14th Ave. S.

The fire was reported at 1:56 p.m.

Fire Chief Matt Price said the fire was contained to a bedroom in the rear of the first floor apartment. He said there was smoke throughout the first and second floors.

The dog was found in a kennel in the living room of the first floor apartment, according to Price. A firefighter freed it and brought it out a side door. The dog was able to walk away with its owner and jump into his pickup.

The building has one apartment on the first floor and one on the second floor. Price said the resident of the first floor apartment was not home when the fire ignited. The resident of the upstairs apartment was home and was sleeping, he said. She woke up, found her apartment filling with smoke and called 911.

Price said the fire was accidental. He said the resident of the first floor apartment had earlier reported electrical problems. Firefighters were examining the fuse box and other electrical components to determine the cause of the blaze.

The fire-damaged building is near the intersection of 14th Avenue South and 22nd Street. About two blocks of busy South 22nd Street were closed because a large diameter hose line was connected to a hydrant at the intersection.

Fort Dodge police also responded to the scene. Police and firefighters were on the scene until about 3 p.m.

The building is owned by Donald and Sharon Colby, of Barnum, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office. It was built in 1901, according to those records.

Starting at $2.99/week.
