Arson suspect back in custody

New hearing set for Freeman

An accused arsonist who failed to show up for an April 21 guilty plea hearing has been arrested.

Megan S. Freeman, 34, of Fort Dodge, was arrested by Fort Dodge police in the 1800 block of Fifth Avenue South on Monday, according to court records. A hearing on her case was set for May 19.

Freeman is accused of setting a fire in a second story apartment at 211 N. 12th St. on the afternoon of Jan. 26. That apartment sustained serious fire damage while the rest of the second floor sustained heat and smoke damage. No one was injured.

She was arrested by Fort Dodge police on Jan. 27 and charged with first degree arson, third degree arson and first degree harassment.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys eventually reached an agreement in which Freeman would plead guilty to second degree arson and all other charges would be dropped. She would have received a 10-year suspended prison sentence, a $1,025 fine and five years of probation. She would also have to stay in a residential treatment program at the YWCA.

She was released from the Webster County Jail in April when a vacancy in the YWCA program opened.

However, she failed to show up for the April 21 plea hearing. A nationwide arrest warrant was issued for her at that time.

Starting at $2.99/week.
