FD U.S. Cellular to lay off local employees

Cell phone giant selling operations to T-Mobile

Ten employees at the Fort Dodge U.S. Cellular location, 2925 Fifth Ave. S., will soon be laid off as part of U.S. Cellular’s nationwide merger with T-Mobile.

According to Iowa Workforce Development, nearly 500 U.S. Cellular employees in Iowa will lose their jobs in June, including more than 140 workers in Des Moines, Johnston, and Fort Dodge. More than 4,100 employees nationwide will be laid off.

“In May 2024, U.S. Cellular announced the decision to sell its wireless operations and select spectrum assets to T-Mobile following a review of strategic alternatives for the business,” the company said in a statement. “For more than 40 years, U.S. Cellular has delivered on its mission of connecting people to what matters most, and this transaction will ensure customers continue to have access to a fast, high-quality network and outstanding service.”

U.S. Cellular employees may be given the opportunity to transition to T-Mobile, according to the statement. Information on store closings is also not currently available and will be made closer to the sale’s closing date.

“We anticipate a smooth transition for U.S. Cellular customers, who will have the option of remaining on their current plans or switching to a T-Mobile plan after the transaction closes,” added the company in a statement.

According to Iowa Workforce Development, the last day for Iowa employees is June 2.

Pending regulatory approvals, U.S. Cellular anticipates the sale to T-Mobile to close in mid-2025.

Starting at $2.99/week.
