Police ID man who died during fire
Fall, not gunshot, claimed his life
The man who fell to his death during a March 19 fire in Fort Dodge has been identified by authorities.
The Fort Dodge Police Department on Wednesday identified the man as Shawn L. Gully, 49, of Fort Dodge.
Although the initial call for help claimed Gully had been shot, the staff of the State Medical Examiner’s Office found no evidence of a gunshot wound, according to the Police Department. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that his death was caused by a fall from a third story window at 1035 First Ave. S.
Police and firefighters were called to that address at 12:18 a.m. March 19 for a report of a person with a gunshot wound.
Arriving on scene, emergency personnel found Gully laying in front of the building, plus heat and smoke coming from a third floor apartment.
The first arriving firefighters and paramedics worked to try to resuscitate Gully, while additional firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and Gully was pronounced dead at the scene. The fire was contained to a third floor apartment on the west side of the building.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Police Department at 515-573-1424. They can also contact Webster County Crime Stoppers by calling 515-573-1444, visiting www.wccrimestoppers.com or texting LEC and the information to 274637.
