Taking center stage with Nicole Mosier
Love of music; passion for music guides Mosier's career path

As a senior there usually aren’t a lot of firsts that a student will have.
But St. Edmond High School senior Nicole Mosier was able to be one of the first Gaels to play in Fort Dodge’s All-American Marching Band.
Mosier, who plays the trumpet, was part of the new experience.
“It has been a very fun and interesting experience. I am proud to be the first group from St. Edmond in the Dodger Band and the Marching Band,” Mosier said. “I had heard the marching band playing in the morning during school, and I had always thought that sounded so fun. I had also wanted to be a part of a marching band. So when the opportunity came, I jumped at the chance.
“I was a little nervous though, because I didn’t have much experience with the Senior High,” she added. “But when I met everyone, they were very welcoming. It was great learning about marching band and being in a big band.”
Mosier enjoyed her experience with the Dodgers.
“It has been really fun,” she said. “I have really enjoyed meeting all the new people, especially the trumpet section.
“I have really enjoyed getting pushed to new levels on my trumpet. I really enjoy being in both wind ensemble and symphonic band and jazz 1. I wish that going over to Senior High was an option before. I would’ve totally done it if I could’ve.”
Along with the bands at Fort Dodge Senior High, Mosier takes part in St. Edmond’s concert, elite, show and chamber choirs. She has taken part in three musicals as well as running track and playing tennis.
Now Mosier is involved in speech as well as Respect for Life at St. Edmond and 4-H.
“I got involved with choir for the first time my freshman year,” Mosier said. “It is something that I have seen in church before, and I always knew I wanted to do it. I have always loved to sing.
“The main thing I love about it is that it is a group of 20-40 people singing the same song with multiple different parts. I’m an alto and it is really cool to provide harmony for the songs. I also love the unity of the choir.”
Through her activities and high school career, Mosier has had one constant with her — her twin sister Emily.
“It is a very unique experience that I wouldn’t change,” said Nicole, who is 30 seconds older than Emily. “It is nice to have someone I can always talk to about anything all the time. It is also nice to have her because we are always pushing each other to higher levels.
“Emily is more physical than I, and so she pushes me to higher levels with sports and things like that.”
Her sister has been a huge influence on her as well as others.
“Some of my biggest influences have been my parents and my sister Emily Mosier,” Mosier said. “They have pushed me to try my best at everything academically and physically.
“Brady O’Brien has also been a very big influence to me with music. He inspired me and got me more interested in music and that is really why I am wanting to pursue a music major.”
Even with all of her musical interests, Mosier has found time to be on stage.
“I enjoy being able to meet new people and working with people (in musicals),” Mosier said. “I enjoy being a character and expressing that character in my way. I enjoy all the singing and dancing that is involved. I enjoy seeing all the behind the scenes stuff, like the stage crew and lights.
“I got interested in performing by watching multiple musicals, and it was something that I wanted to try because it looked really fun.”
Speech has been a big part of Mosier’s ability to step on the stage as well.
“I learned about speech through different teachers and my mom. I learned about the different events I could do and it sounded fun,” Mosier said. “I enjoy the competition and learning new activities like how to put on an entertaining act on the spot. Or how to do musical theater.
“I also enjoy working with the people in speech and getting to know the people in speech through the competitions.”
Mosier has also found time for clubs, as part of The Respect for Life group.
“The Respect for Life group is a pro-life group trying to stop abortion in Iowa and eventually the U.S.,” Mosier said. “One thing that we do is going on the March for Life in Washington D.C. every year in January. We also organize multiple fundraisers and help other pro-life organization’s fundraisers throughout the year.
“I wanted to be a part of it because I want to help the pro-life movement. I believe in it, so I wanted to help.”
Through the year, Mosier is also involved in 4-H.
“I have a meeting every month on Sunday. We do different activities throughout the year,” Mosier said. “We have a Halloween party, a fun spring activity, a 5-K fundraiser in the spring, a tie blanket project every year, and of course the county fair. For that, I do static exhibits for the fair.
“In the past I have sewed things, baked things, redone things like a rocking chair and a headboard, some home improvement projects, and a lot more. Then sometimes I have gotten some things to the Iowa State Fair. That is always a big achievement.”
Mosier has also taken her talents to athletic venues.
“In the spring, I play tennis. It works quite well because it starts soon after the musical is over,” Mosier said. “So, thankfully, it doesn’t conflict. During that time, tennis becomes my main focus.
“After school everyday, I have tennis practice and then I have multiple meets during the week.”
As her final year of high school winds down, Mosier will miss a lot of things, but is also excited for the next adventure.
“I’m going to miss all the people and friends I’ve made. I am going to miss all the activities in high school like show choir and speech,” Mosier said. “I’m going to miss doing the musical for school. I am going to miss doing band at Senior High.
“I’m very excited for college and going my own way in life. I am looking forward to taking more complex music classes. I’m also looking forward to being more independent and getting away from my brothers.”
After graduation, Mosier plans on attending Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. She wants to major in music.
“I plan on being very involved with music throughout college and hopefully in the community as well,” Mosier said. “I want to get myself out there with music as much as I can.”
