Wreaths presented at rural Stanhope cemetery
Saturday event a part of Wreaths Across America

STRATFORD -- Despite freezing rain and icy roads, the Wreaths Across America ceremony took place on Saturday at the Shakespeare Center in Stratford.
Virgene Monthei, of rural Stanhope, helped coordinate the event along with several other citizens. She also acted as host and moderator of the event.
Approximately 30 people braved the weather to attend.
Randy Monthei, a 40-year veteran of the Iowa Air National Guard in Boone, shared his experiences as a Black Hawk Helicopter pilot.
All eight branches of the armed services were honored with wreaths that were presented by area veterans.
About 15 people showed up to present 92 wreaths at Lawn Hill Cemetery, which is south of Stanhope.
The mission of Wreaths Across America is to: "Remember the fallen. Honor those who serve. Teach the next generation the value of freedom. Our volunteers are the beating heart of the program and work year-round to share this important mission and inspire others to join."
For those interested in contributing to Wreaths Across America, a special two-for-one program will continue until Jan. 17, 2025.
