Downtown fire remains under investigation
No one injured in Tuesday blaze
A downtown Fort Dodge building sustained significant damage in a Tuesday night fire.
No one was injured in the fire at Central Avenue and 11th Street. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Fort Dodge fire and police departments.
The fire was reported at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames coming out of second floor windows on both the east and west sides of the building.
According to Fire Department reports, the fire involved two second floor apartments and part of the second floor hallway. There was heavy fire damage in those areas. The third floor sustained heat and smoke damage.
Initially, it was reported that a resident of one of the apartments was in the building when the fire ignited. Firefighters did not find anybody inside during extensive searches. It was later determined that the individual was at a relative’s home.
The three-story building has two addresses. The front part, where Harty’s Caddy Shack Cafe was located, is 1101 Central Ave. The side of the building, where the former Captain Hook’s Lounge was, has an address of 7 S. 11th St. The structure is called the Cadwell Building.
It was built in 1916, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office.

In 2020, it received extensive brick work, new windows and awnings as part of a downtown facade improvement project paid for in part with a $500,000 state grant.
The building is owned by Rick Thompson, of Fort Dodge.
It is near a building at 1107 Central Ave. that was the site of a major fire in the early morning hours of Nov. 17. Six people were injured and the building sustained massive damage.
