Fort Dodge firefighters work at the scene of a Sunday evening blaze at 2012 S. 11th St. that destroyed a trailer home and damaged a nearby garage and pickup truck. No one was home when the fire was reported and no one was hurt. The cause of the fire remains under investiagtion.

A trailer home in the Coleman District south of Fort Dodge was destroyed in a Sunday evening blaze that also damaged a nearby garage and a pickup truck.

The heat of the blaze at 2012 S. 11th St. melted a plastic gas pipe, prompting MidAmerican Energy workers to dig into the ground to stop a gas leak.

No one was home when the fire was reported and no one was injured.

The fire was reported at 6:15 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, there were flames shooting out of three sides of the trailer. The fire was also spreading into the garage, which was only a couple feet from the home. Three hoselines were used to extinguish the blaze.

Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said the trailer was destroyed. He said the roof was starting to cave in. He said there was significant fire damage to the garage and a Chevrolet pickup that was parked near the trailer.

He said the gas pipe melted beneath the gas meter, which is why utility workers had to dig into the ground to clamp off the leak.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday night.

The home is owned by Westside Fort Dodge Properties LLC, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office.

Webster County sheriff’s deputies assisted Fort Dodge firefighters at the scene. Emergency personnel were on the scene for about two hours.

Sunday’s blaze was the second structure fire in the Fort Dodge area over the weekend. At 3:24 a.m. Saturday a fire was reported in the attic of a home at 2400 Ninth Ave. S.

Hergenreter said that fire caused heavy damage in the attic, plus smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the house.

Starting at $4.94/week.
