GOWRIE — Members of the Southeast Valley High School Student Council are leaders inside the building and outside as well.
When the need for available drivers and volunteers to deliver congregate meals arose in Gowrie, the Student Council stepped in to fill the void, delivering to community members every Wednesday.
“I am proud of our student council stepping up in this way and others,” said Callie Swieter, Southeast Valley High School teacher and Student Council adviser. “We have some great students who know the value of being involved in their community and helping others.”
At the beginning of the school year, students are partnered in groups of four with each group delivering meals once a month.
“It’s a fun way to give back to the community and to help out where there is a need,” said Southeast Valley High School sophomore Emilia Bloomquist.

“Our students seem to enjoy getting out to help in the community for congregate meals,” said Swieter. “Whenever a student is unable to deliver on their week, another is willing to step up and take their place because they understand the importance of being involved and getting the meals delivered.”
According to Southeast Valley High School Principal Kerry Ketcham, the students participating receive volunteer hours as part of the school’s silver cord scholarship activities. Participating students don’t have to be part of the Student Council, though the current group of students delivering each Wednesday all are.
