South Central Calhoun Schools report threat of violence
Juvenile in Florida arrested for threat
ROCKWELL CITY — A social media threat that may have referred to the South Central Calhoun School District Monday has led to a teen in another state being taken into custody.
“At approximately 4:30 p.m. (Monday) I received an email from a former student who was very concerned about a Snapchat that one of her relatives received and had forwarded on to her,” said South Central Calhoun Superintendent Brad Anderson. “The content of the Snapchat implicated Lake City High School and/or Middle School as being the next spot for a school shooting.”
According to Anderson, the threat did not include a date, time, or indication of which Lake City the sender was referring to as there are towns named Lake City in Florida, Minnesota, and Iowa, and other states.
Following an investigation, it was determined that there was no credible threat against South Central Calhoun School District.
A juvenile in Florida was later taken into custody and charged.
“The investigation into the threat found that it was a post made in an outside jurisdiction, but was still being circulated around the South Central Calhoun School District due to the identical town name,” said Calhoun County Sheriff Pat Riley.
“We thank our local authorities for their quick action and communication during this perceived threat,” said Anderson. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these situations carefully.”
With recent threats to schools nationwide, the sheriff’s office says all threats involving school districts in Calhoun County will be investigated until they are deemed not credible or resolved.
“We appreciated the public’s assistance and cooperation with this matter,” said Riley. “Even with the threat being deemed not credible, please don’t be alarmed by extra law enforcement patrolling around all schools in Calhoun County in the coming days, as we continue to provide safety to our communities and schools.”
