Gov. Kim Reynolds speaks Thursday evening at a fundraiser for state Rep. Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge, which was held at the Community Orchard. Reynolds said Meyer has helped to drive a “bold, conservative, transformative agenda” in the state legislature.

Gov. Kim Reynolds touted the things state government has cut during her watch — income tax rates and bureaucracy — during a Thursday evening visit to Fort Dodge.

“We’ve worked really hard to give communities and families the things they need to succeed and prosper,” the Republican governor said.

Reynolds spoke at a fundraiser for state Rep. Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge, held at The Community Orchard. About 65 people attended. Meyer is unopposed as she seeks her fourth term in a district that includes Fort Dodge and eastern Webster County.

Meyer, the governor said, has helped drive a “bold, conservative, transformative agenda” in the legislature.

“She comes to the table with solutions,” Reynolds said. “She’s really focused on getting things done.”

She said she has worked with Meyer and other Republican lawmakers to implement income tax cuts which will result in the state having a 3.8 percent income tax rate effective Jan. 1.

She said they passed a 1,400-page bill that eliminates 21 state government agencies.

In an interview following her remarks to the group, Reynolds said she does not expect to do much about replacing former Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg until after the November general election. Gregg resigned Sept. 3 to become president and chief executive officer of the Iowa Bankers Association.

She said she has “kind of started a list’ of lieutenant governor candidates. She said she is looking for someone she will have a ”great working relationship with” and added that she will consider state government leaders, local government leaders and people in the private sector.

“I’ve met a lot of great leaders,” she said.

Reynolds said she is still working on the priorities she will present to the legislature in January. She said because so much has been accomplished in the last few years, her list of proposals probably will not be as robust as her previous ones.

House Speaker Pat Grassley, R-New Hartford, also spoke at the fundraiser to endorse Meyer and talk about Republican accomplishments.

“We have done such a great job managing the budget that we don’t even talk about it anymore,” he said.

Meyer said that in the 2025 legislative session she will be working on maternal health care

She said she will also resume her effort to require electronic devices to be used in hands-free mode while driving. She has tried to get such a bill passed every year she has been in the legislature.

“I have some very good strategies going forward,” Meyer said.
