OHV renewals to be sent by email

Current registrations expire in December

Off-highway vehicle owners need to register their vehicles with the Webster County Recorder’s Office, but they won’t be receiving a renewal reminder in the mail this year. Instead, it will be in their email inbox.

“We don’t receive funding to send out renewal notices, and I cannot justify spending 69 cents on a stamp when the county only receives $2 of the registration fee,” said Webster County Recorder Lindsay Laufersweiler. “The rest of that renewal goes to the State of Iowa.”

The Webster County Recorder’s Office has been collecting email addresses from customers since 2021 and will be sending out email reminders to all terrain vehicle, off road vehicle, off road motorcycle, and snowmobile owners in both September and in December.

According to Laufersweiler, when her office began collecting email addresses for customers in 2021, it sent out 583 emails. It has since doubled the outreach and will be sending 1,120 emails to owners in 2024.

Current registrations won’t expire until Dec. 31. Laufersweiler said if the vehicle is current on registration, the fee to renew is $18.50. However, if an owner did not renew for the 2024 season, the fee is $28.50 which includes a $5 penalty plus a $5 partial year fee.

A new Iowa law, effective July 1 also eliminated the user permit required for Iowa residents but did increase snowmobile registration prices. Snowmobile owners with a current registration, will be charged a $33.50 renewal. However, if the snowmobile was not registered for the 2024 season, the registration fee is $43.50 which includes a $5 penalty and a $5 partial year fee. Nonresidents will still be required to display an Iowa Nonresident User Permit on their snowmobiles.

According to Laufersweiler, all off-highway vehicles can be registered in-person at the Webster County Recorder’s Office, by calling the Recorder’s Office at 515-576-2401, by paying cash, personal check, or money order and dropping in the Webster County Courthouse dropbox in the east alley, or by mailing payment to the Recorder.

All renewals will require the Iowa registration number, which can be located on both the registration and the decal on the machine.

If an off-highway vehicle owner has recently sold a machine, moved, or even has a new phone number or email address, Laufersweiler also asks that owners call the Recorder’s Office or send a note along with payment so the account can be updated.
