BADGER — Griffin Jorgensen is about to be on the move, in his very own handicap accessible vehicle.

Sunday’s cornhole tournament and benefit auction at Amigo’s in Fort Dodge raised nearly $22,000 to help his parents, Mason and Kimberly Jorgensen, purchase a handicap accessible vehicle that can safely transport the 4-year-old to and from school, therapy and doctor’s appointments, and family outings.

Paired with past fundraisers including lemonade stands, tire sales, and ongoing donations, the community has raised just under $74,000 for the Jorgensen family.

“I don’t know how to express how incredible this journey has been,” said Kimberly Jorgensen, Griffin’s mom. “To see a community come together to meet and achieve a goal like this is amazing, and I still can’t fully wrap my head around it.”

She said that with the donations, they are very close to being able to purchase a brand new handicap accessible van which would include an extra warranty on the vehicle itself as well as the handicap conversion.

“We would love to see these dollars be well spent and his van last as long as possible since it really is such a large purchase,” said Kimberly Jorgensen.

Griffin Jorgensen was born with congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD), and experiences weak muscles and muscle wasting, so he needs medical interventions including use of a wheelchair, a BiPap machine — used to help people with serious breathing problems, and tube feeding. He has a nurse with him both at home and at school. He also needs a handicap-accessible vehicle for safe transportation, but they are an expense that insurance companies won’t take on, which is why his family has been fundraising with the help of the community.

“We really want to thank each and every person and business that donated money, services, merchandise for auction, time ,and most of all, for everyone’s support and belief that we could reach this goal,” said Kimberly Jorgensen. “There are too many to mention. It really took a huge effort on a lot of close friends, family, and the community we live in to pull this off. Thank you.”
