Webster Co. Conservation asks public to help name salamander

A popular attraction at the new Matt Cosgrove River's Edge Discovery Center is a short snouted brown tiger salamander. The long-tailed amphibian is nearly 14 inches long and is a favorite for young and old alike to visit when entering the Discovery Center.
But while many love to visit the salamander and his habitat, he is yet unnamed.
"Several visitors have asked if our salamander has a name," said Webster County Conservation's Lindsay Kavanaugh. "Since we don't have a name, we thought it would be fun to ask the public for suggestions. It's been enjoyable seeing the variety of ideas posted so far."
Webster County Conservation opened a "Hello. My name is..." contest for the salamander earlier this week on its Facebook page.
More than 35 suggestions have been made, including "Dezzy for the Des Moines River," "MC Salamander (Matt Cosgrove Salamander)," "Tony the Tiger Salamander," and "Sid the Salamander."
The Facebook contest to name the native tiger salamander ends Monday. Webster County Conservation said they'll announce the winner next week.
Visitors can stop by the Matt Cosgrove River's Edge Discovery Center to see the tiger salamander from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
