A fond farewell
Stu Cochrane honored for years of service on the FDCSD school board
Stu Cochrane’s penchant for looking to the future wasn’t lost during his final meeting on the Fort Dodge Community School District Board of Education Monday.
His final words to his board colleagues, school staff and members of the community pointed to what could lie ahead.
“All of the members of this board are so skilled and ready to take the vision we’ve created forward,” the retiring board president said. “I really can’t wait to see what happens next.”
Cochrane was presented with an honorary school bell by Superintendent Josh Porter and a plaque by Mayor Matt Bemrich as part of an evening that included a small gathering of family, friends, community members and school district representatives prior to the board meeting.
He served on the board for 28 years, and was its president for much of that time. When he announced his resignation about a month ago, he cited a variety of personal and professional reasons for stepping down.
“Fort Dodge is a unique and special place,” Cochrane said. “It embraces education and supporting the board as a true partner. That fact, along with the chance to develop strong relationships, is why I wanted to do this.”
“It’s been wonderful to work alongside and with so many talented individuals in guiding and facilitating a successful direction for our school district,” he added. “Even though we had disagreements and all came from different life paths, we were able to come together to make decisions.”
There are about two years remaining on Cochrane’s four-year term. The board now has 30 days to appoint a replacement to complete his term. Citizens can also file a petition requesting a special election to fill the vacancy.
Dan Altman will be the new board president beginning with the Sept. 23 meeting.
In other items, the board:
n Learned from Porter that St. Edmond Catholic School will share band with Fort Dodge. He indicated six students will join from St. Edmond.
n Approved fireworks as part of the homecoming football game festivities on Oct. 4.
n Heard from Porter that work on the Dodger Stadium refurbishment project is progressing.
“I think, in many cases, we may be ahead of schedule,” he said. “It could be possible to see finishing touches in the next month or two.”
