2 people injured in home explosion near West Bend
Debris strewn across acreage and roadway
WEST BEND — Two people inside a home in Kossuth County were injured when it exploded Monday morning.
According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department, the home, located at 606 110th St., southeast of West Bend, exploded at approximately 9 a.m.
The West Bend Fire Department and Ambulance Service, Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office and Kossuth County EMS responded to the scene and found debris throughout the acreage and roadway.
Authorities found Catherine Fleischhacker, 44, on the west side of the residence under the debris. West Bend Fire and EMS personnel were able to remove her. She was transported to the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona and then by Mercy Life Flight to Mercy Hospital in Mason City with undetermined injuries.
Brett Lanning, 21, was also inside of the residence at the time it exploded, but was able to crawl out from under the debris on his own. He was transported to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital by West Bend EMS.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Kossuth County Sheriff Roger Fisher said there are no safety issues or concerns to the public from this incident.
First responders were assisted at the scene by Kossuth County Emergency Management, Humboldt County Emergency Management, the West Bend Police Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
