Part of the street and the sidewalk in front of 809 Central Ave. remained closed Friday evening after bricks fell from the uppermost part of the six-story building's facade Thursday evening. Olde Boston's Restaurant and Pub was open for business as usual.

No parking is allowed in a portion of the 800 block of Central Avenue after bricks fell from a six-story building Thursday evening.

Part of the sidewalk in front of 809 Central Ave. is also closed.

At about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, bricks tumbled from the uppermost portion of that building’s facade. No one was injured. A van parked on the street had its rear window shattered and sustained other damage.

As a precaution, Fort Dodge police closed the 800 block of Central Avenue. It remained closed until mid-afternoon Friday.

Workers using a lift examined the facade Friday to assess the risk of any more bricks falling down, according to City Manager David Fierke. He said the building’s owners or their insurance company will have to pay for the repairs.

The building at 809 Central Ave. is called the Boston Centre because it was once the site of the Boston Store. It was built in 1914, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office.

The building’s ownership is in a condominium arrangement, with each floor having a separate owner.

Also Thursday evening, bricks fell from the facade of the city-owned Citizens Central building at 617 Central Ave. A smaller number of bricks fell there, and the street did not have to be closed.

Starting at $2.99/week.
