Shortly after the Saturday shooting at a rally of former President Donald Trump, local Webster County political leaders along with leaders statewide took to social media and a variety of media outlets to address and update constituents as well as to quell heightened political temperatures.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility.” The Webster County Republican Central Committee posted to the Facebook page the response from Trump spokesperson Seven Cheung,

State Rep. Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge, shared a photo taken by an Associated Press photographer and said, “continuing to pray for President Trump, the families of the fallen victims, and our country. Thankful for all the first responders.”

Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener posted a photo of himself and Chief Deputy Derek Christie alongside Trump as well as the photo also shared by Meyer stating, “Keeping all affected in our prayers. I have met a few of these agents, brave men and women.”

Webster County Supervisors Mark Campbell as well as Niki Conrad also responded to the shooting on social media.

“The incident this afternoon with President Trump is incredibly shocking and disturbing to have occurred with a former U.S. President and presidential candidate,” said Campbell. “I’m thankful that he is safe, but thoughts are with him, his family and staff. May justice be served for this violent act towards our democratic process.”

“In a democracy, we settle our differences with ballots, not bullets. Violence has no place in politics,” added Conrad. “This sort of malice, vitriol, and hatred cannot be tolerated, cannot be sowed. Although we’re still learning what happened, we should all agree that this is shocking and terrifying and none of this should have happened. Period. My sincere sympathies to the families and friends of the people killed this afternoon in Pennsylvania and to those injured, including former President Trump. I hope for them all a quick and complete recovery.”
