Altman charged in pistol whipping attack

A man who went into a Fort Dodge bar early Sunday morning and pistol whipped another man has been jailed on multiple criminal charges.

Terry L. Altman, 59, of Fort Dodge, went into Fourth Street Depot, 300 S. Fourth St., at 2:30 a.m. Sunday with a handgun and stated something like “no one will be leaving alive,” according to criminal complaints filed against him.

He then pushed a woman before attacking her husband, hitting him repeatedly on the back of the head with the butt of the handgun, the criminal complaints state. The man suffered lacerations on the back of his head from the attack.

Altman, of 838 Ninth Ave. S.W., was arrested by Fort Dodge police and was charged with these crimes:

• Intimidation with a dangerous weapon (two counts).

• Going armed with intent.

• Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon (two counts).

• First-degree harassment (two counts).

• Assault causing bodily injury or mental illness.

Altman made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Monday morning. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 11.

Magistrate William Habhab set his bond at $22,000 cash only.
