King Band concerts continue Sunday

The Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will present a special concert on Sunday starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. There is no admission charge, with these concerts being provided by the City of Fort Dodge. There will be an ice cream social preceding and during the concert, courtesy of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

Conductor Jerrold P. Jimmerson and assistant conductor Dan Cassady will once again lead the band in another evening of fine band music. Since June is typically considered the month for weddings, Jimmerson has planned a concert based around the theme of “Love and Marriage.” Paul Bloomquist serves as the band’s announcer.

Marches are always a prominent part of these concerts, and this will be no exception Sunday night. Opening the concert will be John Casto’s “Royal Bridesmaids,” followed by Karl L. King’s “Tuscarawas,” and John Philip Sousa’s “The Bride Elect.” One of Sousa’s most famous marches, “The Fairest of the Fair” will close the concert.

Other compositions by the band’s namesake, Karl King, will include his serenade, “A Night in June,” which was his wife Ruth’s favorite, and the fast-paced circus galop, “Homestretch.” Members of the trombone section will be featured on King’s ragtime selection, “Mournful Maggie.”

Classical offerings on this hour-long program will include W.A. Mozart’s exciting overture to his comic opera “The Marriage of Figaro,” and Richard Wagner’s emotional band work, “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from his opera “Lohengrin.”

Lighter works on the program will include highlights from Lerner and Loewe’s popular Broadway musical, “Camelot,” along with a medley of popular songs “Recorded by Sinatra,” and “I Want to be Happy,” from the musical “No, No Nanette.”

The concert will close in the usual way with the playing of our National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In case of inclement weather, the concert may be cancelled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page listing at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.

Starting at $2.99/week.
