Juneteenth celebration planned

Event will be time for fellowship

Juneteenth will be marked by the Pleasant Valley Awareness Committee this year with a time for community fellowship.

The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. June 23 at the former Sunkissed Meadows Golf Course on Meriwether Drive.

Juneteenth is a national holiday marking June 19, 1865. That is the date the slavery ended in the former Confederacy when Union troops arrived in Texas.

The neighborhood’s Juneteenth celebration has traditionally been held at H.C. Meriwether Park on 10th Avenue Southwest. Due to construction in and around the park, the festivities have been moved.

“The celebration will focus more on community fellowship,” said Sherry Washington, president of the Pleasant Valley Awareness Committee.

She described it as “a laid back setting of music, a few games and food.”

Former City Councilman Terry Moehnke will be honored for his many years of service.

Charlene Washington will be recognized for chronicling local Black history for more than 50 years.

“We’re looking forward to a good old-fashioned meet up to learn and talk about history, maybe dance a bit, eat some good food, share a recipe or two, play a game and just simply check on each other — fellowship,” Sherry Washington said.
