Two items related to the future of the water system were advanced by the Fort Dodge City Council on Monday during a short meeting.
The council unanimously approved the first reading of a measure creating a water main fee connection district.
This district surrounds the path of a 12-inch diameter water main installed on the northwest edge of the city in 2021. It extends north along U.S. Highway 169 and then goes east along 180th Street.
Properties that are not currently connected to the city water system will be allowed to connect to that main for a fee.
That will equal the number of acres in the property to be connected multiplied by $3,117.
The connection fee measure must be approved twice more to become law.
The council also voted unanimously to hire McClure Engineering Co., of Fort Dodge, to prepare a Drinking Water Supply and Treatment Preliminary Engineering Report at a cost of $425,000. The report will outline potential future steps to ensure the city's drinking water supply for the future.
Cargill will pay $379,000 toward the cost of the study. Cargill has a plant in the Iowa's Crossroads of Global Innovation ag industrial park west of Fort Dodge.
There was no debate about either of the items during the council meeting.
