As the weather keeps getting warmer, it is time to start thinking about all those improvement projects to do around the house or farm.

An event beginning today will offer lots of ideas to help get people motivated to get things done.

That event is the Shimkat Motor Co. Home & Farm Show brought to you by The Messenger and Farm News.

It will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the East Campus of Iowa Central Community College, 2031 Quaill Ave.

Admission is two canned goods to be donated to local food pantries.

“The staff at The Messenger and Farm News is looking forward to this weekend’s Home and Farm Show,” said Terry Christensen, the publisher of both newspapers.

“We are especially pleased to have partnered with Shimkat Motor Co. for this year’s event,” he added. “We encourage all of you to come out and support our many vendors.”

Two speakers will be featured.

At 2 p.m. today, Holly VanHeel, a human sciences program specialist in food and health for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will talk.

She is a registered dietitian and has a master’s degree in health care administration from Des Moines University. She has worked in health care facilities and provides food safety certification training for the National Restaurant Association. VanHeel has worked for Extension and Outreach for 14 years.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, the reigning Miss Iowa, Alysa Goethe will speak. Her service project is entitled “Not your type: Advocating for Type I diabetes.”

Goethe earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Drake University in Des Moines. She was the head vocal music teacher at Hiatt Middle School in Des Moines before being crowned Miss Iowa.

She has lobbied for diabetes education and research for more than 12 years. She has helped to implement diabetes education in school systems in eight states.

U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Hull, is scheduled to visit the show at 4:45 p.m. today.

Multiple businesses and organizations will have booths set up at the show.

“We encourage you to stop by and visit with these many fine businesses,” Christensen said.
