ROCKWELL CITY — Some kids get to take field trips to farms. Others read books about food and farming through Ag in the Classroom.

Students at South Central Calhoun Middle School in Rockwell City learned more about ag careers on March 21 through Ag Day, which is coordinated by the Calhoun County Farm Bureau board and Calhoun County Extension and Outreach.

This annual event alternates between the middle schools in Rockwell City and Manson each spring. It’s designed to show students the wide variety of careers in agriculture in the local area and beyond.

“Just like farmers plant seeds to grow a crop, Ag Day plants seeds for the students to guide their future, even if they don’t know today what career they will pursue,” said James Hepp, president of the Calhoun County Farm Bureau. “We show the kids that there are many good ag-related jobs here, close to home.”

Throughout the school day, a variety of local presenters, including Calhoun County Farm Bureau directors and other ag professionals, gave the students an inside look at veterinary medicine, livestock production, international ag, agronomy, grain management, ag lending and other careers.

Students carried a worksheet with them during the school day and wrote down three things they learned from each presenter. They were also encouraged to participate in each session and ask questions.

A highlight of the day included the hamburgers that the Calhoun County Cattlemen grilled the students for lunch.

The Calhoun County Farm Bureau directors were pleased to hear many positive comments from SCC teachers about the 2024 Ag Day event.
