One killed in officer involved shooting

A person was shot and killed in Fort Dodge Saturday morning after he reportedly ran toward police officers with two knives, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.

The person has not been identified. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe into the incident.

According to the Police Department, officers were sent to 1525 Fourth Ave. S. at 8:40 a.m. in response to what was described as a “distress call.”

It was reported that an individual inside that residence was out of control and had injured a dog.

Officers were advised that there was an arrest warrant for this individual for violation of probation. He had been placed on probation for an earlier domestic abuse conviction.

Upon entering the home, the officers were confronted by a male armed with two knives who ran at the officers, the Police Department reported. An officer fired his weapon, resulting in the death of the person, according to the Police Department.

The Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Webster County Attorney’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol and the Division of Criminal Investigation were summoned.

“Per standard protocol, the Iowa DCI will lead the investigation into this incident, with our agency fully cooperating to ensure adherence to all laws, policies and procedures,” Police Chief Dennis Quinn said.

“The Fort Dodge Police Department acknowledges the gravity of this incident and recognizes its impact on the community,” Quinn added. “We extend our deepest sympathies to all affected parties during this difficult time. We reaffirm our commitment to transparency and accountability in all of our actions.”

“It’s imperative to underscore the strong relationship between the Fort Dodge Police Department and our community,” he said. “Together we remain dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all residents. We value the trust and cooperation of our community members and pledge to continue working collaboratively to address challenges and foster a sense of security and well-being for all.”
