Officers involved in shooting named

All four remain on leave

As the investigation into the March 16 fatal shooting by Fort Dodge police continues, the officers involved have been identified.

The Fort Dodge Police Department identified them Friday as Sgt. Matt Webb, a 15-year veteran, and patrol officers Nick Ruggles (19 years of experience), Andrew Lane (five years of experience) and Matthew English, (two years of experience).

The officer who fired his gun, killing 24-year-old Tyler Stansberry, has not been publicly identified.

All four officers remain on critical incident leave.

According to the Police Department, the officers were dispatched to 1525 Fourth Ave. S. at 8:40 a.m. March 16 for a report that an individual inside that residence was out of control and had injured a dog.

Once on scene, officers were advised that there was an arrest warrant for that individual for violation of probation. He had been placed on probation for an earlier domestic abuse conviction.

Upon entering the home, officers were confronted by Stansberry, who ran at them with two knives, according to the Police Department. An officer fired his weapon, killing Stansberry.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe into the shooting.
