St. Edmond senior Kara McGonegle was named an alternate to the Class 1A/2A Iowa All-State Jazz Band. McGonegle was selected as an alto saxophone.

Kara McGonegle earned another honor to add to her resume recently.

McGonegle, a St. Edmond Catholic School senior, was selected as an alternate for the Class 1A/2A Iowa All-State Jazz Band.

As one of only three alto saxophones selected from 1A and 2A, McGonegle displayed her talents to the highest level. She was one of just four from 1A named to the combined band.

“I am incredibly grateful to be recognized as an alternate for this year’s All-State Jazz Band, but I could never have done this without the unconditional support of my many teachers, family and fellow band members who have pushed me to be better every step of the way,” McGonegle said. “I have put so much time and effort into saxophone and am so happy to see all of my hard work pay off.

“Overall, I am just proud of the growth that I have made from the first time I auditioned three years ago to now.”

She has been involved in jazz, concert and Gael Force band for the past four years at St. Edmond.

McGonegle was the lone selection from within The Messenger area among the 4A, 3A and 1A/2A squads.

Dr. Dean Sorenson serves as director for the 1A/2A band. Sorenson is an Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Minnesota.

The Iowa All-State Jazz Bands provide hundreds of students an opportunity to interact with America’s leading jazz educators and master musicians. Over the years, the bands have served jazz students with a springback to numerous exciting careers in the music field.

Selections to these groups is by recorded (blind) audition.
